American Red Cross Celebrates 90 Years of Youth Volunteers
 In September, the American Red Cross celebrates 90 years of significant contributions made by youth volunteers in support of the Red Cross mission to help the community prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies. President Woodrow Wilson first established the Junior Red Cross in September of 1917, soon after the United States entered World War I, allowing youth to do their part in times of both war and peace. |

Red Cross Presents Lifesaver Community Award to Peabody Energy
 On Thursday during an onsite award presentation, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter presented its Lifesaver Community Award to Peabody Energy for training its employees in First Aid and CPR on a regular basis and for placing emergency equipment onsite throughout its facilities. A Red Cross Celebration Team, comprised of volunteers and staff, took part in the recognition event to celebrate Peabody's outstanding commitment to helping its employees, constituents and the greater community to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. |

Red Cross Safety Tips for National Preparedness Month Focus on Reducing Hazards at Home, School and Work
 In conjunction with National Preparedness Month (September), the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter has released its third-set of weekly safety tips to focus on reducing hazards in the home, school and workplace. The fourth-annual National Preparedness Month closely follows the release of a local Red Cross survey that indicates many St. Louisans have been affected by an emergency, yet most have not prepared for the next disaster. |

Red Cross Presents Lifesaver Community Award to St. Louis County
 During an onsite award presentation this week, the American Red Cross presented its Lifesaver Community Award to St. Louis County Parks and Recreation. The award was bestowed upon the county for implementing lifesaving Red Cross training in CPR, First Aid, Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and water safety. In addition, the award recognizes the county for utilizing the Red Cross Aquatic Examiner Service to uphold the highest standards of water safety at each of its facilities, for placing AEDs in county buildings, and for hosting regular blood drives onsite. |

Local Red Cross to Issue Safety Tips Each Week During National Preparedness Month for Individuals, Businesses and Schools
The American Red Cross joins the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies at the local and national level to launch the fourth annual National Preparedness Month in September. The St. Louis Area Chapter continues to encourage the community to make emergency preparedness a personal priority. Recent local polling indicates that less than half of St. Louisans have prepared themselves for a disaster or emergency. To help increase the level of local preparedness, the Red Cross will issue safety tips designed for individuals, businesses and schools each week throughout September. |

American Red Cross Trains New Medical Students in CPR
For more than 20 years, the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter has provided training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to Saint Louis University's first-year medical students. In August, Red Cross instructors taught and certified 169 students on the Saint Louis University School of Medicine's campus. Throughout the metropolitan area, the St. Louis Area Chapter trains over 85,000 people in first aid and CPR and over 15,300 in the proper use of AEDs each year. |

American Red Cross Disaster Action Team Responds to House Fire in the 6300-Block of Lena Avenue in Jennings
The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter dispatched a Disaster Action Team to a house fire in the 6300-block of Lena Avenue in Jennings early Monday morning. Red Cross volunteers provided assistance on the scene and caseworkers are supporting the recovery effort of 11 people (five adults and six children) displaced by the fire. The Red Cross provides immediate assistance with shelter, food, emotional support and emergency supplies as needed in the wake of disasters. |

American Red Cross Deploys Disaster Relief Worker to U.S. Virgin Islands in Preparation for Tropical Storm Dean
The American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter deployed Mary Anderson (Belleville, IL), director of disaster readiness and response, to the U.S. Virgin Islands on Wednesday as part of a pre-deployment team preparing for the landfall of Tropical Storm Dean. Forecasters indicate that the storm may strengthen to hurricane status later in the week and pose a threat to Caribbean islands. Also this week, the St. Louis Area Chapter deployed three relief workers to Rockford, IL as part of an ongoing operation in response to severe local flooding. |
