7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Launches New CPR and First Aid Curriculum

New national Red Cross guidelines have been issued for CPR and first aid in an ongoing effort to improve the survival rate related to cardiac arrest and other sudden illnesses. In light of these new guidelines and in support of its mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies, the St. Louis Area Chapter has launched new CPR and first aid curriculum, effective July, 2006.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Hosts Leadership Development Camp for Youth Volunteers

Nineteen Red Cross youth volunteers from the St. Louis metropolitan area recently attended a three-day Leadership Development Camp sponsored by the St. Louis Area Chapter. These youth are active members of Red Cross YouthCorps, contribute to at least one community service project and Red Cross teaching opportunity each year, and are certified in CPR, First Aid and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).

7/25/2006 - Red Cross Disaster Action Team Responds to Shiloh, Illinois Apartment Fire

The Metro East Service Center in Fairview Heights, IL dispatched a Disaster Action Team to a multi-unit apartment fire in the 100-block of Adeline in Shiloh, IL on Monday morning. Red Cross caseworkers are supporting the recovery effort of nine families displaced by the blaze.

7/25/2006 - Mound City Medical Forum Donates $1,000 to American Red Cross Measles Initiative

Approximately 1,000 children in Africa will receive measles vaccinations because of a recent $1,000 donation from the Mound City Medical Forum to the American Red Cross Measles Initiative. Measles is the leading cause of death among children in Africa. In December 2001, the American Red Cross and other partners launched the Measles Initiative, focusing on providing vaccinations to African children. Each vaccine costs less than one dollar.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Invites Lifeguard Teams to Participate in 10th Annual Lifeguard Competition

The St. Louis Area Chapter is seeking Missouri and Illinois lifeguard teams for its 10th Annual Lifeguard Competition on July 23 at Queeny Park from 7:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Teams will have the opportunity to demonstrate and enhance their lifesaving skills through a series of scenario-based testing exercises, including first aid, the rescue of passive and active victims, and the appropriate management of spinal injuries.

7/25/2006 - St. Louis Area Chapter CEO Appointed to Presidential Advisory Council for American National Red Cross

The American National Red Cross in Washington, D.C. has announced that Joseph C. White, CEO of the St. Louis Area Chapter, has been selected to serve a three-year term on its Presidential Advisory Council (PAC). The PAC is comprised of not more than 16 field executives from more than 800 chapters nationwide, representing the geographic diversity of America. Members provide feedback to the President and CEO of the American National Red Cross regarding opportunities facing the organization.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Opens Three Emergency Shelters as Heat Wave and Power Outages Continue

With the support of community partners, the St. Louis Area Chapter opened three emergency shelters at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 20 to provide relief from the heat as extreme temperatures and widespread power outages continue throughout the metropolitan area. In addition, the Red Cross will continue to support area cooling sites operated by the United Way's Operation Weather Survival by providing cold beverages as needed.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross to Host 10th Annual Lifeguard Competition

The St. Louis Area Chapter will host the 10th Annual American Red Cross Lifeguard Competition on Sunday, July 23 at Queeny Park. More than 25 teams from across the state will compete in scenario-based exercises designed to enhance lifesaving skills. Pepsi Americas, Target Stores, Bi-State Pool Management, Lifeguards Unlimited and Pro Pool Management are official sponsors of the event.

7/25/2006 - American Red Cross Opens Fourth Emergency Shelter to Provide Relief from Heat During Power Outage

The St. Louis Area Chapter has opened a fourth emergency shelter at Hazelwood Central High School in Florissant as extreme heat and widespread power outages continue to impact the metropolitan area. The Chapter estimates that approximately 500 people will be sheltered overnight in the four Red Cross shelter locations.

7/25/2006 - Red Cross Volunteers to be Honored in Jefferson County(1)

The American Red Cross Jefferson County Service Center will host its annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon to honor volunteers for their service to the organization and the community. Recognition will go to the Jefferson County Business Partner of the Year, volunteers who have dedicated more than 100 hours of service over the previous year, and the Jefferson County Volunteer of the Year.

5/29/2006 - SSM Health Care Donates $65,000 to American Red Cross in Support of Emergency Services

SSM Health Care recently donated more than $65,000 to the American Red Cross in support of the Red Cross national response to the 2005 hurricane season, as well as the local disaster relief operations for the St. Louis Area Chapter.

5/29/2006 - American Red Cross Disaster Action Team Responds to Maryland Heights Apartment Fire

The St. Louis Area Chapter dispatched a Disaster Action Team to a multi-unit apartment fire in the 100-block of Apple Avenue in Maryland Heights on Wednesday morning. The Red Cross provided assistance on the scene and will support the recovery effort of 25 individuals from eight displaced families.

5/29/2006 - Red Cross Honors Scott Air Force Base Volunteers

The American Red Cross Scott Air Force Base Service Center recently honored volunteers during a recognition luncheon. Award recipients included Lauren Brethauer, Francoise Calvin, Mary Gibbar, Regina Millinder, Lindsay Pickens, Erica Rice, Karen Vernon and Amber Weidman. Other special guests included Col. Raymond Rottman, 375th Airlift Wing Commander and Col. Halifax King, 375th Medical Group Deputy Commander.

5/29/2006 - Taylor-Morley Homes Donates $5,000 to American Red Cross in Support of Water Safety Training

For the second year in a row, The Community Partnership at Taylor-Morley Homes has donated $5,000 to the American Red Cross St. Louis Area Chapter in support of the Access to Aquatics program. Access to Aquatics serves underprivileged and disabled children throughout the St. Louis region through Learn-to-Swim programs and other water safety training.

5/29/2006 - American Red Cross Encourages Public to Prepare for Severe Weather and Remains on Standby to Respond

The St. Louis Area Chapter encourages the public to prepare in advance for potentially dangerous storms. On Wednesday, four local disaster relief workers were deployed to Caruthersville, MO to assist in the ongoing recovery effort throughout the region.
