Jerry Stevens may be retired from the military, but he's busier than ever.
The 67-year-old Jefferson County resident is a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team.
The team is composed of thousands of volunteers across the region who respond to fires, floods and other disasters to render immediate assistance to those affected.
If a house fire breaks out, Stevens is on call 24 hours a day.
"We'll get a call from the fire department, then fill up our vehicles with hot and cold water and plenty of Fig Newtons," Stevens said. "We'll talk to people whose homes have burned down and (address) their immediate needs: money for food, shoes and socks, clothing, coats and blankets."
The Red Cross also provides a two-night stay in a local hotel for individuals or families who have nowhere else to turn in the wake of a disaster.
"People don't know what to do next," Stevens said. "They're worried but very appreciative. We try to give them a group hug and tell them 'we're here to support you.'"
All Red Cross support is free.
Having such support in the aftermath of a fire is critically important, according to Dale Chambers, who manages the Red Cross service center in Arnold.
And the need for disaster support is increasing.
"We've had 80 cases since July 1 of last year," Chambers said. "That's a significant increase."
While Stevens enjoys the camaraderie of working with the Disaster Response Team, he also enjoys his volunteer work with the Disaster Education Team, touring local schools to teach students the ins and outs of disaster preparedness and general safety," he said.
Staying save in the water is a top priority this time of year.
Stevens advises students to always use the buddy system, and to never swim without an adult.
"This is the time for drownings," he said. "You always need to keep an eye on your kids."
The Red Cross is always looking for new volunteers like Stevens to spread the gospel of safety and help provide on-site disaster support.
The only requirements are that you be 18 years old (14 with a parent) and consent to a background check.
"There really are no other limitations," Chambers said. "We provide the training."
For Stevens, volunteer work is its own reward.
"I love the teamwork," he said. "We have a fabulous staff."
